Dr Zara (Stephanie Linus) is a successful African doctor who practices in Wales, despite her achievements she never volunteered to go to Africa to help but her mother Mrs Robbins who adopted her frequents the continent to help with the medical situation especially on women.
Mrs Robbins took ill and unable to make her trip ,Zara finally volunteered to go and was welcomed by the matron (Liz Ameye) who got her acquainted with the situation on ground, it also availed her an opportunity to confront her past ;to reconcile with her long lost daughter.
Back in Nigeria,Sanni (Tijani Faraga)a rich old man decides to marry 13 years old Halima which was allowed by tradition against the will if the young girl who didn't have a say.
Halima is finally married off to Sanni and subjected to rape ,early pregnancy and after all the torture ended up with Vesico Vaginal Fistula.(VVF) which was seen as a spell rather than a disease that can be cured. The young Halima was rejected by family, friends and only her mother(Hauwa Maina) and Fatima(Rahana Hassan) stayed with her till the end.
Zara was able to trace her child through Madam Kodjoe the pimp and it turned out that Halima was Zara's daughter but her biological mother couldnt save her by the time she was finally brought in for treatment.
It turned out that Zara also suffered from VVF as a child but was made 'Dry'
The movie production, acting, suspense, is fantastic ,from the burning of the community clinic, hospital, the surgery scenes
,the picture quality ,depiction of scenes, one will get a realistic and vivid imagery in one's head from the funny hospital scenes with the white couple ,Dr Mutanga (Klint d Drunk) in Nigeria .
It also exposes the poor medical situation, babaric laws.low level of awareness , what tradition can do to boost the welfare and well being of their communit`y and challenges of the African woman and the hypocrisy of some members of the political class etc
I watched the movie and found it difficult to fault until someone beside me at the cinema said 'How can Sanni' s mother (Rekiya Attah)who is meant to be a village woman be flawless English?(Maybe she could have sounded a bit local....just saying)
At the end of the movie,Zara was able to connect better with her love Alex(Darwin Shaw) and expose her uncle(Hakeem Hassan) who raped her when she was a child. She was able to obtain more governmnent aid and support for the awareness on VVF .
Dry movie was not dry,it is Brilliant!
